Chiyobo-inari and Yoro-no-taki Falls
The Chiyobo-inari Shrine is familiarly known in the neighboring area of Nagoya. People gather from all over not just to worship but also to visit the shops along the front approach to the shrine. The legendary “Yoro-no-taki Fall” is located in a 30 minute-driving distance, which is also a popular sightseeing spot.
It is called the “Ochobo-san” among the local people. The shrine was built in the Muromachi period (1336 to 1573) by Mori Hakkai who belongs to a baronial family, with an intention to maintain the ancestors’ spirits for over thousand years. Chiyobo-inari, which has an annual visitors of 2 million, is believed to be beneficial for prosperous business and well-being of the family.
The “Agé” (deep-fried tofu), which is a favorite of the fox, a symbol of the Inari shrine, and candles are sold beside the main shrine.
Over 100 shops stand along the front approach to the Chiyobo-inari. Many are unique and original, attracting a lot of people whose main purpose is to do shopping.
Special cuisine in this area uses fish caught in the Kisogawa river. Enjoy other local traditional dishes such as the Namazu-no Kabayaki (grilled catfish with sweet say sauce), Sashimi of Ayu (sweetfish), and Funamiso.
The most popular shop along the approach to the Chiyobo-inari is “Tamaya”. Miso-kushi-katsu is their best seller. Hot skewered fried pork is dipped into a miso sauce. The slightly sweetened miso which makes a perfect match with the pork will be beyond your expectations.
For those who are not fond of the miso taste, try the sweet Kansai style sauce. A bunch of sliced cabbage placed beside the big pot is eat-all-you-can. Certainly goes good with the freshly deep-fried pork.
Kushi-katsu is very reasonable,worth trying!
The trendy local Japanese confectionery shop, Kawashima-ya stands in a 5 minute-driving distance from Chiyobo-inari. We recommend the Kusa-mochi and Mitarashi-dango. Natural wild wormwood leaves are used for the Kusa-mochi (rice cake), completely harmonizing with the Azuki red bean paste. Mitarashi-dango (sweet rice dumplings) using fine quality rice are grilled just perfectly, making it an excellent piece. Both are chewy and delicious.

It is selected as Japan’s Top 100 waterfalls and also as the 100 Exquisite and Well-Conserved Waters. With a height that reaches around 30 meters and a width of 4 meters, the water that falls on to the rocks creates a relaxing atmosphere. Yoro-no-taki fascinates visitors as it shows different beauty according to each season of the year.
The fall is also known as a historical spot where the Empress Gensho (680 to 748) during the Nara period paid a imperial visit. Feel the long history of the area while walking in the nature.
A 30 minute-walk from the parking area will take you to the Yoro-no-taki. It is an upslope along the river. Various shops, museums, a monument inscribed with a poem of Kitahara Hakushu, a famous poet, the Yoro Shrine and more other stand along the way creating a traditional atmosphere.
After a little walking, quench your thirst with the Yoro cider and Ramune soda-pop made of the clean fall water!
The area surrounding Yoro-no-taki Fall is famous for observing the autumn leaves. The best time of the year is mid to late November.
